Below the Wing Airline Employees: Do You Qualify for Interline Cruise Rates?
7 min read
I recently found myself thinking about this while onboard Celebrity Ascent, cruising through Italy, Greece, and Croatia.
Airline employees spend their careers helping other people travel, but many still do not realize they may have access to interline cruise rates themselves.
And interline cruise eligibility is not necessarily limited to pilots and flight attendants.
Ramp agents, baggage handlers, mechanics, fleet service employees, ground operations teams, cargo staff, and other below-the-wing employees may also qualify with participating cruise lines.
The important question is not simply whether you work “below the wing.”
It is whether the cruise line recognizes your employer, employment status, and traveler relationship under its current interline eligibility rules.
What Does “Below the Wing” Mean?
In airline operations, “below the wing” is commonly used to describe many of the employees working on or around the aircraft at ground level.
Roles may include:
- Ramp agents
- Baggage handlers
- Fleet service employees
- Aircraft mechanics
- Maintenance personnel
- Ground operations employees
- Cargo employees
- Ground support teams
- Station operations employees
Terminology varies between airlines, so your exact job title may be different.
More importantly, the phrase “below the wing” itself does not determine whether you qualify for an interline cruise rate.
The cruise line’s current eligibility rules do.
Can Below-the-Wing Airline Employees Qualify for Interline Cruise Rates?
Potentially, yes.
Employees working for qualifying airlines and aviation employers may be eligible for interline cruise pricing with participating cruise lines.
This may include employees of companies such as:
United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Alaska Airlines, JetBlue Airways, FedEx, UPS, DHL, and other qualifying aviation employers.
However, eligibility is not universal.
It can depend on:
- Your employer
- Your employment status
- Your job classification
- The cruise line
- Who will be traveling
- Whether the employee must travel
- Required documentation
That is why eligibility should be verified before selecting a sailing based on an interline fare.
Do Ramp Agents Qualify for Interline Cruise Rates?
Ramp agents may qualify under certain cruise-line interline programs.
The exact rule can depend on the airline or employer as well as the participating cruise line.
A ramp employee should be prepared to provide information such as:
- Employer
- Current employment status
- Job or department
- Who will be traveling
- Required proof of employment
Do not assume that a coworker’s eligibility automatically means your booking will be treated the same way.
Do Airline Mechanics and Maintenance Employees Qualify?
Aircraft mechanics and maintenance employees may also qualify with participating cruise lines.
These roles are sometimes overlooked because most conversations about airline travel benefits focus on pilots and flight attendants.
But interline programs can recognize other qualifying airline employees as well.
The important thing is to verify your employer and employment category with the specific cruise line before booking.
What About Baggage Handlers and Fleet Service Employees?
Baggage handlers, fleet service employees, and other ground-service employees may qualify with certain participating cruise lines.
Some interline programs recognize broad categories of employees working for qualifying airlines.
Other programs use more specific rules.
If your title does not obviously sound like a traditional airline role, that does not necessarily mean you are ineligible.
It simply means the rule should be checked.
Can Cargo Employees Get Interline Cruise Rates?
Certain employees of cargo and logistics companies may also qualify.
This may include qualifying employees working for:
- FedEx
- UPS
- DHL
- Other participating aviation or cargo employers
Cargo eligibility can vary more significantly between cruise lines, so this is an area where verification is particularly important.

Can My Spouse or Partner Use My Eligibility?
Possibly.
Some cruise-line interline programs may extend eligibility to spouses or domestic partners.
Certain programs may also recognize parents, parents-in-law, dependent children, retirees, or other qualifying family members.
But the rules vary.
One cruise line may allow an eligible spouse or partner to travel without the airline employee.
Another may require the employee to be part of the booking or sailing.
Never assume a family rule applies across every cruise line.
What Documentation Might Be Required?
Cruise lines may require proof that the traveler meets their interline eligibility requirements.
Depending on the cruise line and traveler, documentation may include:
- Current airline or employer identification
- Company badge
- Employment verification
- Retiree identification
- Proof of relationship for a qualifying family member
- Other documentation requested by the cruise line
A company badge alone does not automatically guarantee eligibility with every cruise line.
Is an Interline Cruise Rate Always the Cheapest Fare?
No.
This is an important point for any airline employee.
An interline fare may be available while the same cruise line is running a public promotion.
A public offer may include benefits such as:
- Onboard credit
- Drinks
- Wi-Fi
- Gratuities
- Cabin upgrades
- Reduced deposits
- Other promotional benefits
Sometimes the interline fare provides the stronger value.
Sometimes the current public promotion does.
The useful comparison is:
Interline fare vs. current public fare + included benefits
At KTE Interliner, we compare the available options rather than assuming that an interline fare automatically provides the best value.
How Should a Below-the-Wing Employee Start?
You only need a few pieces of information.
1. Your Employer
Tell us which airline, cargo carrier, or aviation company you work for.
2. Your Role
Ramp, baggage, maintenance, fleet service, cargo, ground operations, station operations, or another position.
3. Your Employment Status
Are you active or retired?
4. Who Is Traveling?
Are you traveling yourself? With a spouse or partner? Parents? Children? Other family members?
5. Your Cruise Plans
If you already know the cruise line, ship, dates, or destination, include that information.
Once those details are known, eligibility can be checked and available interline pricing can be compared with current public offers.

Why I Thought About This on Celebrity Ascent
Being onboard Celebrity Ascent, sailing through Italy, Greece, and Croatia, reminded me how broad the airline community really is.
It takes far more than pilots and flight attendants to keep an airline moving.
Ramp employees load aircraft.
Mechanics keep them operating safely.
Baggage teams move thousands of travelers’ belongings.
Ground operations coordinate what happens between arrival and departure.
Cargo teams move goods around the world.
Those employees are part of the aviation community too.
And many may never have thought to ask whether their airline employment could give them access to interline cruise opportunities.
That is one of the reasons I continue building these eligibility guides.
